The Complete NJ Teen Driving Guide

Everything a New Jersey parent and teen need, from the first permit to an unrestricted license, explained step by step.

New Jersey's licensing process for new drivers is run through the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which phases in driving privileges over time. This guide walks through the whole journey in plain English. For the official rules, see the NJ MVC.

The two main paths

Which path your teen takes depends on age. At 16, the "early-bird" route requires enrolling in driver education and completing a 6-hour behind-the-wheel course with a certified school before the permit is validated. At 17, a teen can skip the course and apply directly for an examination permit.

Step 1: Get the permit

A 16-year-old completes the knowledge and vision tests, the required 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and then validates the learner's permit at the MVC. Full details are in our guide on how to get your NJ permit at 16.

Step 2: Log supervised practice

Before the road test, NJ requires 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night, certified by a parent or guardian. The permit must also be held for at least 6 months.

Step 3: Pass the road test

At 17, with practice complete, the teen takes the road test. In our area that's the Lodi MVC — see what to expect at the Lodi road test and what you're scored on and how to pass.

Step 4: Probationary license, decals & restrictions

A new driver receives a probationary license and must follow GDL rules, including displaying red decals and obeying the curfew, passenger, and phone restrictions. After 12 months in good standing (and at 18), they can move to an unrestricted basic license.

What it costs

See our breakdown of driving school costs in NJ for the 6-hour course, lessons, road-test prep, and MVC fees.

In short

Permit at 16 (with the 6-hour course) → 6 months of supervised practice and 50 logged hours → road test at 17 → probationary license with decals → unrestricted license at 18.
