What the practice requirement means, how to certify it, and a free printable log to track the hours.
New Jersey requires new drivers to complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including at least 10 hours after dark, before taking the road test. The rule exists because logged practice produces safer drivers. Details are published by the NJ MVC.
A supervising driver must be at least 21, licensed for at least 3 years, and seated in the front passenger seat. A parent or guardian usually fills this role.
The hours are attested with a signed Certification of Supervised Driving, presented at licensing along with the other required documents. A driving log helps you track progress toward the 50 hours.
Print this and keep it in the glovebox. Aim for a range of conditions — day and night, highways and local streets, rain and clear weather.

Get the 10 night hours done early — families often leave them to the end and scramble. Mixing in highway practice also pays off on the road test.
