5 Common Reasons People Fail the NJ Road Test (and How to Avoid Them)

Roughly a third of New Jersey drivers don't pass the road test on their first attempt — and it's almost never because they can't drive. It's small, fixable habits. Here are the five that trip people up most, and how to beat each one.

1. Rolling through stops

The most common mistake is treating a stop sign like a slow-down. Examiners want to see a complete stop — the car fully still behind the line — every time. Fix: count "one-one-thousand" at every stop until it's a habit.

2. Observation the examiner can't see

You might be checking your mirrors, but if the examiner can't see you do it, it doesn't count. Quiet, internal glances lose points. Fix: make your mirror and shoulder checks obvious — visibly turn your head before moving, turning, or changing lanes.

3. Parallel parking

Parallel parking is where nerves show up most. Fix: practice it until it's automatic, using fixed reference points on the car and curb. Doing it a dozen times in a quiet lot beats reading about it a hundred.

4. Speed and lane drift from nerves

Under pressure, drivers creep over the limit or wander in the lane. Fix: practice smooth, steady speed control and lane position ahead of time, and take a slow breath before you pull out. Calm is a skill you can rehearse.

5. Not knowing the test area

Unfamiliar turns and stop signs add stress you don't need. Fix: practice the actual route where you'll test. For most of Bergen County that's the Lodi MVC road test — rehearsing those exact streets is one of the biggest edges you can give yourself.

The pattern

Four of these five come down to two things: complete stops and visible observation. Nail those, drill parallel parking, and practice the real route — and you're ahead of most first-time test takers.
