Why your 16-year-old needs this course

In New Jersey, a 16-year-old must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a state-certified driving school to get a validated learner's permit.

This is the "early-bird route" under the state's Graduated Driver License program, and it's the only way for a 16-year-old to start supervised driving and become eligible for the road test at 17. It isn't optional, and it can't be done by a parent — it has to be a certified school. Drivers who wait until 17 can skip the course and apply for an examination permit directly.

We built this program to make those six hours genuinely useful — not just a box to check. Most teens start nervous and finish noticeably more confident, with the habits that carry them through the road test and their first year of driving.

Does a 16-year-old really need all 6 hours?
Yes — it's a legal requirement in New Jersey. A 16-year-old cannot get a validated learner's permit without completing 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction at a certified school.
How long does it take to finish?
The 6 hours are split across multiple sessions scheduled around school. Most teens complete the course within a few weeks, depending on availability.
What documents do we need?
6-point ID (such as an original birth certificate or US passport), a Social Security card, and a signed driving-school contract. We confirm the full list when you enroll.
When can my teen take the road test?
After the 6 hours, permit validation, and the required supervised practice, the road test can be taken on or after the 17th birthday — for Bergen County, at the Lodi MVC.
