Road signs: shapes & colors

You can often answer a sign question from shape and color alone, even without the words.

Rules of the road

• Right on red: allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign says otherwise.
• Steady yellow light: the light is about to turn red — stop if you safely can.
• Flashing red: treat it like a stop sign. Flashing yellow: slow down and proceed with caution.
• 4-way stop: first to arrive goes first; if you arrive together, the driver on the right goes first.
• Roundabout: yield to traffic already in the circle.
• Lines: double solid yellow = no passing either way; broken white = lane changes allowed.
• Pedestrians in a crosswalk always have the right-of-way.

Speed & distance

• 25 mph in business/residential districts, 35 mph in suburban business/residential areas, 50 mph in many other areas, and 65 mph only where posted (unless otherwise signed).
• Two-second rule for following distance — increase it in rain, snow, or fog.
• Total stopping distance = perception + reaction + braking distance.
