How Much Does Driving School Cost in NJ?

What to budget for the 6-hour course, lessons, road-test prep, and MVC fees.

Costs vary by school and program, but here's a realistic picture for North Jersey so you can budget.

The 6-hour teen course

The state-required 6-hour behind-the-wheel course for 16-year-olds is typically sold as a package, commonly in the $450–$550 range locally. Ours is $499 plus MVC fees.

Adult lessons

Adult lessons are usually priced per hour — roughly $80–$120 in our area — with packages bringing the per-hour cost down. Ours start at $90/hour.

Road-test prep

A road-test prep session, often including use of the car for the exam, generally runs $150–$200. Ours is $175 with the car included.

MVC fees to budget separately

Worth knowing

For 17-and-older first-time drivers, the 6-hour course isn't required — so adults can often spend less, paying only for the lessons they actually want.
